Vote of no confidence against Ursula von der Leyen - Secret messages with Pfizer?

Brussels - Ursula von der Leyen's (66) EU Commission must face a vote of no confidence in the EU Parliament.

Parliament President Roberta Metsola has informed the parliamentary group leaders about the upcoming vote. If Parliament withdraws its confidence in the Commission, the entire body would have to resign - a political earthquake in Brussels!

The vote of no confidence was initiated by Romanian MEP Gheorghe Piperea. At least 72 MEPs had to support the motion for it to be debated and voted on next week.

This requires a two-thirds majority of the votes cast and, at the same time, a majority of the members of the Parliament. That would be at least 361 if all MEPs are present and cast their votes, or even 480 votes. In last November's election, Ursula von der Leyen's Commission received 370 of 688 votes cast.

Piperea and the other applicants accuse von der Leyen and the Commission of refusing to disclose text messages exchanged between von der Leyen and the head of the US pharmaceutical company Pfizer during the coronavirus crisis. In this case, the EU court recently ruled that this had been done without sufficient legal justification.

In addition, there is criticism that coronavirus vaccines worth around four billion euros have remained unused and that the Commission allegedly influenced elections in member states such as Romania and Germany through a distorted application of the Digital Services Act.

In an initial response, EPP leader Manfred Weber described the motion as a party political game that would not even come close to securing a majority in Parliament. 'Europe voted a year ago and Ursula von der Leyen is leading the EU through turbulent times with a strong mandate,' said the CSU politician.

'This is the increasingly irresponsible populism of the political extremes,' commented Daniel Caspary (CDU), chairman of the CDU/CSU group in the European Parliament, and Angelika Niebler (CSU), co-chairwoman of the CDU/CSU group and chairwoman of the CSU European group, on the vote of no confidence.
