You can fool all the people some of the time. |
Reports in mainstream media stated that up to 30 or more demonstrations took place this weekend (3rd and 4th of August 2024). Many media outlets (Let's start with the BBC) are referring to the demonstrations as riots whereby from what we have seen in the last few days this term may well in some cases be perfectly accurate. However it is wrong to claim that everybody demonstrating is a rioter and in some cases a thug. We have a long history of freedom of speech and the right to demonstrate. It goes without saying that only peaceful demonstrations are permitted and that freedom of speech also has certain limits or to coin the modern term red lines. What is more worrying is that those demonstrating or if you prefer the term rioting against immigration and in some cases Islam in general are not just the obvious visible extremists that some are trying to convince us. There is a huge anti immigration feeling in our country. This is not just an opinion but rather has been proven in polls and elections since and before the Brexit referendum. The government (not just this one) has achieved nothing. At least nothing significant. The number of illegal channel crossings is still at an intolerable height. Keir Starmer's claim that forming a new agency and talking to countries to persuade them to take back refugees and asylum seekers will likely and quite quckly prove to be entirely useless. Does he seriously want to negotiate with Syria's Assad or the Taliban? Many are also trying to obfuscate the situation by purposely arguing that we are in need of immigrants to man our hospitals. But these are not the immigrants that those who are now demonstrating about are trying to rid us of. They are not living in expensive temporary accommodation, they are paying taxes, doing a good days work. Their visas are dependent on them having a job and not claiming they might be persecuted in their homeland. They are not pretending to be christian converts. Starmer will soon realise that his soft talk is not working. The authorities, call them labour government, it would seem are trying to hide the true extent and depth of resentment in the UK. You can fool all the people some of the time, you can fool all of the people some of the time but you can't fool all of the people all of the time. -pw- London François-Marie Arouet - Known as M. de Voltaire Je ne suis pas d'accord avec ce que vous dites, mais je d,fendrai jusqu'... la mort le droit que vous avez de le dire I do not agree with what you have to say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it |
