Issue November-26

At the end of August both staff and students of the famous West Point US military academy met for the opening of what many believed was a historic 1820's time capsule.on Monday for what was supposed to be a historic moment: the opening of a mysterious 1820s time capsule.

The presumed time capsule had been discovered several months previously when a war memorial to  a hero named Thaddeus Kosciuszko had to be moved. When the statue was removed it revealed a box which must have been underneath it since it was erected in 1829.

The event was live-streamed  and there was commentary from the West-Point historian Jennifer Voigtschild who had invited the audience to "literally uncover a piece of West Point history"

It was to be expected that there was agreat deal of speculation as to what the box might contain. Some thought it would be simple stuff like an US Flag or  maybe some jewelry.

The grey almost cube shaped box measured 12 x 12 x 13inches.

Two of the school employees wearing purple rubber gloves and white masks were tasked with opening the time capsule.

When at last they opened the box, all they discovered was some soil, mud or dust. "We're not sure if it's soil or mud or dust," said one of the openers, adding: "The box didn't quite meet expectations."

It is hard to believe though that somebody purposely left a box of mud to posterity. Maybe whatever had been in the box had disintegrated. Evidently it is planned to have the silt or whatever it is minutely inspected.
